We Make The City Amsterdam hosts the 2019 Fab City Summit

Following the success of the Fab City Summit 2018 in Paris, the global Fab City community will this year meet in Amsterdam, as part of the We Make the City Festival, which will be hosted by Fab City Amsterdam consortium members Pakhuis de Zwijger in collaboration with Waag and Metabolic and the Metropolitan region of Amsterdam. The annual event gathers the Fab City community to discuss, debate and exchange approaches towards creating locally productive, globally connected cities. This year will focus on social inclusivity and circularity as two key themes which have arisen as thematic interests from the Fab City Network.

A word from We Make The City

As we all know, the world is facing major ecological, social, and economic challenges. Complex issues manifest themselves more prominently: urgent, challenging, alarming. Everyone is needed to solve them. Cities play a crucial role in this. Apparently, they have something special. Cities have the ultimate mix of competing and collaborating, of criticism and optimism, of deep thinking and just doing. We mobilise everyone who lives, resides or works in cities. The festival is a celebration with one clear objective: better cities of, for, and by all! The theme of 2019: how can we make better cities from, for and by everyone? We mobilise everyone who lives, resides or works in cities to join in, participate, experience. Brogues, patta’s, blue collars, activists, hackers, minorities, helmsmen on shore, captains, majorities, authorities, and grass roots; everyone. No one is left out.

Working on the Roadmap

This event will provide an opportunity for the different levels and interest areas of the Fab City distributed community of practice to come together in one place and work collectively on the Fab City roadmap. Bringing their own experiences from their local setting, city representatives including City leaders and Officials are invited to join a dedicated program of workshops, exchanges and networking sessions. The program will be curated and led by members of the Fab City Collective — including representatives from Fab City Grand Paris, Fab City Barcelona and expert input from Fab City Seoul, who will have recently hosted the 5th Fab Asia Network Conference event with the Mayor of Seoul Won soon Park.

Fab15 in Egypt

The Fab City Global Initiative is also tightly connected with the global Fab Lab Network. Fab Labs serve as ‘trojan horses’ to launch and influence local Fab City programs in cities. When joining as a new Fab City members, a consortium must include City, Civic and Fab Lab actors. The theme of Fab15 is “Collectively Independent.” A topic that resonates with the Fab City commitment. The program will explore how we can enable each other as a community of individual makers, Fab Labs and cities around the world to become independent. The themes of the event will centre around: Interdependence, Towards 4.0, Fab City, Design Sensing, Making to Learn.

Fab City Summit 2020

Montreal is in line to host the next dedicated Fab City Summit in 2020. The announcement was made as part of the proceedings in Paris and work is underway for the Montreal team, lead by Communautique. Innovation, urban futures, self-sustainment and of course, the Fab City Campus will all be on the agenda in Montreal.

“It is quite natural that Montréal was chosen to host the Fab City movement, because of its industrial city heritage. Since the 90’s, Montréal has begun to transform its post-industrial neighborhoods and revitalize its urban fabric, in order to regain its vitality as a city on a human scale, economically fertile and, above all, highly creative. This is an active community of citizens, entrepreneurs, artists, makers emerging from this dynamic that will be waiting for you at the world Fab City Summit in Montreal in 2020,” said Raquel Pe ñ alosa, president of Communautique .
